Psalm 23:4b For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
In caring for his sheep, the good shepherd, the careful manager, will from time to time make a careful examination of each individual sheep. As each animal comes out of the corral and through the gate, it is stopped by the shepherd’s outstretched rod. He opens the fleece with the rod; he runs his skillful hands over the body; he feels for any sign of trouble; he examines the sheep with care to see that all is well. This is a most searching process entailing every intimate detail. It is, too, a comfort to the sheep, for only in this way can it’s hidden problems be laid bare before the shepherd.
This is what was meant in Psalm 139:23-24 when the Psalmist wrote, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
If we will allow it, if we will submit to it, God by His Word will search us. There will be no “pulling the wool over His eyes.” He will get below the surface, behind the front of our old self-life and expose things that need to be made right. – A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller, Pg. 116
Our ABBA Father, our Protector, and our Faithful Shepherd deeply cares for each of us so much so that He lovingly corrects and disciplines us when we are going astray or doing something that will potentially harm us or others. It’s not His will for us to walk down the road of destruction, therefore, He gets our attention by stretching out His rod in order for us to turn from evil and instead, walk along His righteous paths which lead to everlasting life.
His rod is also an instrument of protection. The shepherd uses his rod as a defense mechanism to protect his sheep from any danger. The Lord is our Protector and Defender. He does the same for us; He protects us from anyone and anything who may try to bring harm or destroy us.
Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
According to W. Phillip Keller’s book, the staff is a unique instrument used for the care and management of sheep.
The staff is essentially a symbol of the concern, the compassion that a shepherd has for his charges. No other single word can better describe its function on behalf of the flock than that it is for their comfort.
The shepherd uses his staff to draw sheep together into an intimate relationship. Similarly in the Christian life we find the gracious Holy Spirit, the Comforter, drawing folks together into a warm, personal fellowship with one another. It is also He who draws us to Christ, for as we are told in Revelation, “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!” – A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller, Pgs. 119 – 121
Our Good Shepherd desires that we each have a close, personal, deep and intimate relationship with Him. He’s our One True Love Who loves you and I with an everlasting love. He wants us to walk in close fellowship with Him every day and include Him in every area of our lives. Let’s keep the Lord at the center of our lives and truly love Him with all of our hearts, with all of our souls, and with all of our strength.
Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
There is for the true child of God that intimate, subtle, yet magnificent experience of sensing the Comforter at his side. This is not imagination – it is the genuine, bona fide reality of everyday life. There is a calm, quiet repose in the knowledge that He is there to direct even in the most minute details of daily living. He can be relied on to assist us in every decision, and in this there lies tremendous comfort for the Christian.
Your staff comforts me! Your Spirit, O Christ, is my consolation! – A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller, Pgs. 123-124
